About the author: Patrick Debusseré
Patrick Debusseré’s journey through the world of classic cars was sparked early, with his first car being a 1942 Willys Jeep—a vehicle that laid the groundwork for his lifelong fascination with vintage automobiles. His fascination regarding Peking to Paris started in 1997, when a similar Willys Jeep won the inaugural re-enactment of the legendary 1907 Peking to Paris Motor Challenge. This Peking to Paris afficionado probably has the world’s biggest collection of first edition books in all possible languages, including all kind of automobilia and watches specially made for this epic rally.
In 2019, Patrick entered the seventh edition of the Peking to Paris rally with his meticulously restored 1933 Dodge Roadster, affectionately named ‘Polly.’ The journey was nothing short of remarkable: Polly not only carried Patrick and his navigator to Paris but also secured multiple awards, including the highly coveted Spirit of the Rally Award. Their success cemented Patrick’s reputation as a skilled and spirited competitor in the vintage rallying world.
The journey didn’t stop at the finish line. Inspired by his experience and his collection of all the different first editions of Luigi Barzini’s Peking to Paris book, Patrick set out to create a modern tribute to the rally. The resulting publication, Peking to Paris 2019 – The Ultimate Motoring Challenge, was a resounding success. Filled with captivating photography, vivid participant stories, and the rally’s unique camaraderie, the book earned high praise from car enthusiasts and press alike, leading to a new book on the 2024 rally.
Patrick’s dedication to authenticity and adventure is evident in every detail of his work. From the three-year search for Polly to her meticulous preparation—including engine enhancements in the USA and restoration work in Australia—every step reflects his commitment to preserving the spirit of pre-war motoring. His deep respect for the history and culture of vintage car rallies shines through in his books, which are not just about the cars, but about the people, landscapes, and challenges that make the Peking to Paris rally a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
